Woodward Design+Build was enlisted as the General Contractor for the construction of a 28,000 square foot, multi-purpose building at Dillard University in New Orleans. Woodward’s duties were to provide value analysis and constructability support during Phase I, which was final design and establishing of the guaranteed maximum price. During Phase II, Woodward issued bid packages, awarded subcontracts, and performed all project management duties through completion of the project.
The two-story structure is neatly located on the northwestern end of campus, and is enveloped by several of the campus’ stately oak trees. The structure consists of a pile-supported structural steel frame, a glass curtainwall facade, and a thin upsweeping roof line. The prominent design feature is clean thinline detailing with open lobbies and hallways in the main corridor. The Lobby finishes include terrazzo & fritztile floors, maple paneling, and a monumental stairway of glass and stainless steel.
The first floor includes several conventional lecture rooms and a theater style lecture hall as well as a computer lab. The entire building features fiber optic as well as internet service. The lobby area has a designated casual study area with contemporary finishing.
The second floor houses departmental offices as well as a state-of-the-art remote learning lab, conference rooms and a boardroom. While many of the upstairs finishes are functional for an institutional building, the boardroom features high end finishes, the latest in audio visual technology, and custom design elements.
