Ochsner Health Systems: The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center

Woodward acted as the general contractor on Phase I of the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center, building an entry pavilion seamlessly connected to the existing building. The 5-story, steel frame structure provides a front door and focal point for the cancer center, increasing Ochsner’s visibility and community engagement from the street.

The project included a 225 space parking lot and building tie-ins to the 4 stories upstairs, creating bridges on the upper floors to connect to the 5th floor cancer center, 3rd floor blood bank and other Ochsner facilities. Where patients needing MRI screening used to be transported through an exterior breezeway, Woodward built an interior, air-conditioned walkway connecting the hospital to the MRI building. Throughout construction the Woodward team maintained a clean environment with walk-off mats and a filter system to keep dust from entering the existing medical building.

The entry pavilion is complete with a glass façade facing River Road. The windows use environmentally friendly, low-E coating and are built to resist up to 130 mph winds for hurricane damage prevention. In addition to promoting energy efficiency, these windows create a serene environment for cancer patients coming in and out of the building.
