Blue Plate Artist Lofts

Woodward Design+Build acted as general contractor for the renovation of this historic landmark in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans. Built in 1941, the streamlined, modern facade of the Blue Plate Building has stood as a Mid-City landmark in New Orleans for generations. So much so that the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Located at the corner of Earhardt Boulevard and Jefferson Davis Parkway, the 4 story building was shuttered after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Through the efforts of Woodward Design+Build and the development team of HRI Properties and JCH Development, this iconic former factory has been carefully converted into 72 artist’s apartments.

Some of the special details of this project include a complete refurbishment of the iconic Blue Plate sign and salvaged and reused portions of interior glazed terracotta tiles and glass block. Two buildings in the rear were demolished and brick from these structures was reused to build a fence around the property. Other features include the additions of a new roof deck and light well and the addition of a solar array to provide green energy to the building.

Blue Plate Artist Lofts was recognized with a Safety Award of Merit from Engineering News Record Texas & Louisiana for excellence in safety during the construction process. The project has also received a 2012 Excellence Award from Multi-Housing News for Best New Development: Adaptive Reuse, a testament to the vision of developers HRI Properties and JCH Development.
