Belleville Assisted Living Center

Woodward Design+Build provided general contracting, engineering, and design services for the renovation of this former elementary school. Located in historic Algiers Point, Belleville Elementary School long served as a focal point of the surrounding neighborhood and key element of the community. In recent years, the abandoned building had become an eyesore as it sat dormant for many years. In fact, the building was not only in disrepair, but actually in precarious structural condition when the team from Woodward Design+Build first walked through the building.

March 28, 2012 marked a new day in the community as the grand opening of Belleville Assisted Living Center welcomed hundreds of people to view the newly rehabilitated and reimagined facility. The original school building now serves as the main building of Belleville Assisted Living. Where the schoolyard once stood, the addition of a newly constructed Building 2 was designed to blend perfectly with the historic schoolhouse next door to add additional space for senior living. The original kindergarten building was also repurposed to provide additional apartments. A central courtyard is also surrounded by a chapel and multi-purpose building that will provide salon services and community space for numerous activities. Finally, a single story home on the property was moved to another location to serve as the administrative offices for Belleville staff.

The project earned a Louisiana Landmark Society 2014 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

This was a project that was near and dear to my heart as my family is from the neighborhood. I watched with the rest of the Algiers Point Community as the building sat vacant since 1985 and numerous attempts to redevelop the property over the years failed. I cannot express in words how fortunate I feel to have had the opportunity to be the architect responsible for the renovation of these beautiful buildings. I feel additionally blessed to have worked with the unbelievably talented team of designers, engineers and construction professionals at Woodward and with our subcontactors, who made this project a reality. It is truly a joy to hear the compliments and see the smiles on the faces of Algiers Point residents, many of whom I have known my entire life, after they saw the completed project. I am additionally excited to know that the facility is in extremely good hands with the staff of St. Luke’s. Great things come from great people, and Belleville Assisted Living Center is a shining example of that statement.
