Dillard University Professional Schools Building
President Marvalene Hughes has described the new Dillard University Professional Schools Building on campus with words such as “cathedral”. This award winning project presented the challenge for the Design+Build team to create a modern flagship building that was both flexible in use and paid homage to the historic campus it is part of.
Woodward Steel Group erected 610 tons of structural steel. Many special features were incorporated into the building such as 18” pipe columns that were 65’ long. The multiple wing roofs required a complex plan and the skill of an experienced erector to tie in to the main structure. Architectural tube steel trusses in the atrium helped create the grand presentation upon entering the facility. Steel stairs were used throughout the building. In addition, construction of the main auditorium involved creating a room with radius edges.
Truly, Woodward Steel Group was a key member of a team that has given Dillard the 21st Century landmark facility that they envisioned for their campus. The building has been designed and built to LEED Gold standards, and will be the first LEED Certified building on a college campus in Louisiana.
