Biloxi Jr. High School

The new 195,000 square foot Biloxi Junior High School (BJHS) consists of 52 classrooms in separate academic wings for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Students and faculty can make use of three new computer labs, two science labs and four STEM learning labs on the state of the art campus. The school’s new gymnasium features two full-size basketball courts and a stage with theater quality lighting. A 9,000 sf dining hall sits adjacent to a 15,000 sf outdoor courtyard that students can use as a study and social space during school hours. BJHS now boasts a fine arts wing, complete with a piano lab and band hall with separate rooms to accommodate specialized instrument practices. A glass room inside the library acts as the student media center, which houses books, magazines, videos and other research materials.

The project consisted of a 2-story academic wing and a single story extracurricular wing, dining hall, and gymnasium constructed of structural CMU and steel with face brick and metal panel exterior. Inside, contemporary design elements include glass railings, acoustical clouds and gypsum board formed accent features. Curtain wall window systems designed to meet impact rating requirements allow natural light to pour into the hallways. Flooring finishes include carpet, luxury vinyl tile and terrazzo in the center common stairwells. In addition to the main building, the project also included all site utilities, parking lots, roadways, landscaping and civil concrete. Despite facing more than three months of rain days, the team completed this project in time for students’ first day on August 4, 2017.
