Lula Restaurant-Distillery Begins Construction in Lower Garden District

4 May 2016

Woodward Design+Build and the Lula Restaurant-Distillery team enjoyed a champagne toast to mark the groundbreaking of this exciting renovation project. The first restaurant-distillery in Louisiana, Lula will open this October 2016 with seating for approximately 175 in a main dining area and patio.

New Orleans, LA [May 3, 2016]—Louisiana’s first restaurant-distillery, Lula Restaurant Distillery, began renovations yesterday afternoon at its future location on 1530 St. Charles Avenue. The momentous occasion was commemorated with a cocktail toast and hors devours. Attendees included Lula owners, Jess Bourgeois and Bear Caffery, along with representatives from Woodward Design Build, the contractor set to lead the renovation of the building and numerous supporters.

“We are extremely excited to start construction on Lula,” said Bourgeois. “The road to this point has not been easy; but, we have had the help and support of many throughout the process—from the New Orleans City Council to the Louisiana State Legislature. What better way to celebrate than by putting the shovels aside and toasting this very important milestone.”

Lula Restaurant-Distillery will offer a full-service restaurant featuring fresh southern food with Louisiana influence along with craft cocktails made from Lula’s German-made copper still. The spirits—vodka, rum and gin—will be distilled on-site and made from Louisiana sugarcane. Other features of the concept include an adjacent special events space, outdoor patio, and off-street parking.

As the first of its kind in the state, Bourgeois and Caffery were required to get approval from the Louisiana State Legislature via House Bill 233. That bill was signed last summer allowing Lula to move forward as well as paving the way for future restaurant-distillery concepts in the state.

Lula is set to open this October 2016 with seating for approximately 175 in the main dining area and patio.
