The New Orleans Hornets are exploring plans to possibly build a new practice facility at the New Orleans Saints’ complex.

Tom Benson owns both franchises and some of his top team executives now hold dual roles for the Saints and Hornets. Earlier this month the NBA’s Board of Governors approved the Hornets’ sale to Benson, who purchased the franchise from the NBA in April for $338 million.

Hornets General Manager Dell Demps said Friday they are looking into plans about a new practice facility and he likes the idea of having it at the Saints’ complex in Metairie.

“I think it will be fun like a campus,’’ Demps said. ``You have the Saints on one side and the Hornets on the other. We’re looking into it. Mr. Benson is pulling out all of the stops and we’re happy about it. He’s going to give our team and players every opportunity to develop and compete at the highest level with everything we need.’’

Earlier this month Gov. Bobby Jindal signed off on the state’s capital outlay bill, which will include up to $60 million as part of a deal to keep the Hornets in New Orleans through 2024.

The money will go toward improvements over the next two years to the New Orleans Arena and could be used for other work such as construction of a new practice facility.

The Hornets have been practicing at the Alario Center in Westwego since the team relocated from Charlotte, N.C., in 2002.
