When a pastry chef opens a café and bakery, you expect the desserts to be the stars of the menu. And they are at Gracious, the new breakfast and lunch cafe opened by Megan Forman.
But the savory side of things is where Forman admits she’s also having quite a bit of fun.
The menu includes a succinct lineup of house-made breads, pastries, salads and sandwiches, such as the smoked ham with pecan-cheddar spread, pepper jelly and apple slices on baguette, rosemary roast beef brushed with horseradish cream cheese on a Kaiser roll, and poached shrimp and spinach salad dressed with a white remoulade.
“I finally had a minute to brainstorm lately and my mind goes straight to savory,” Forman said.
Forman, a former pastry chef for Sucre and Bayona, opened Gracious with her husband, Jay Forman about two weeks ago after a brief interruption by Hurricane Isaac. The café is housed on the ground floor of the new offices for Woodward Design+Build, on a busy stretch of Jefferson Davis Parkway near Xavier University.
The space is clean-lined and modern, letting the glass case filled with pastries, breads and desserts be the eye-catcher in the room. Admittedly, it’s hard to tear your gaze away from the cranberry frangipan cake, chocolate brownie brioche, peanut butter milk chocolate opera cake and butterscotch panna cotta, to name a few.
Chai, organic Assam and bella coola iced teas, and coffees from French Truck, a small batch roaster, also are served.
